An Accessory Dwelling Unit (or ADU for short) is a unit that may be added to your single-family or multi-family lot, giving you extra space or allowing tenants to live in a separate dwelling. ADUs can be created by converting existing space (like a basement or garage), building a new attached or detached structure (usually in a backyard), or by converting a portion of your single-family home into a separate living unit (called a Junior ADU).
